Welcome
Public health emergencies give rise to unique public health challenges that can contribute to scarcity of medical resources and services.
Emergency planners have a duty to provide guidance related to the ethical allocation of scarce medical resources and services during public health emergencies.
This Project seeks to develop ethical guidelines for allocation of scarce medical resources and services during public health emergencies in Michigan. Our Project leaders and Ethics Advisory Committee have developed a number of resources to assist in making resource allocation decisions during emergency circumstances.
The Ethical Guidelines for Allocation of Scarce Medical Resources and Services During Public Health Emergencies in Michigan (Guidelines) provide an ethical framework for the allocation of scarce medical resources and services during public health emergencies.
In the simplest terms, they answer the question of how health care providers can make decisions about access to scarce medical resources and services when there is not enough for everyone to have access to these resources and services immediately.
The purpose of the Guidelines and other project materials is to minimize the harm caused by public health emergencies, while allowing fair processes to protect all individuals. In addition, the Guidelines are designed to provide a consistent framework for coordination and cooperation within the state of Michigan on issues related to scarce resource allocation during emergencies.
